Agalloch – Marrow of the Spirit

This Agalloch release is one for which I’ve been waiting a long time. After choosing their seminal album The Mantle as my top album of the decade last year, I would have been sorely disappointed if this release was, well, disappointing. This album was everything I wanted: bleak, inviting, heavy, ethereal, and other adjectives as well. From the almost indie-style guitars on my favourite track “Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires” to John Haughm’s curdled cries on “Black Lake Nidstang,” it’s a diverse album. Albeit an album for one season.
